Aizawl Adventist Hospital

Name of the Organization

Aizawl Adventist Hospital under Medical trust of Seventh-day Adventist with its head quarter in Western India Union Office Complex, Salisbury Park, Pune 411037, Maharashtra, India is one of the 8 hospitals under the trust. The chairman is the president of the Southern Asia division of Seventh-day Adventists, with its headquarters in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, India.

Brief History

Looking back into the future, Aizawl Adventist Hospital is the First Seventh-day Adventist church run Hospital in North-east India. The Idea to start the hospital was first voiced in 1971 when Lushai Hill was one District in the state of Assam and in Seventh-day Adventist church organization, the Mizo circle was under Assam section of SDA and which in turn was under Northern India Union of SDA with its headquarter in New Delhi .In 1986 Government of Mizoram, Southern Asia Division of Seventh-day Adventist and ADRA Canada contributed total sum of 3 lakhs to begin the construction of the original Hospital. But, it was only in 1995 that Drs. Narendra and Daisy Rani Rao and family a committed doctor couple came, wherein renovation of the original building which was then in a state of disrepair began, thus began SDA medical work in Mizoram. The fact was that from 1995 they ran a clinic in their home, it was on 27 February 1996 that Aizawl Adventist Hospital was officially opened as a 10 bedded in-patient facility with a small X-ray Machine, basic Laboratory services and a Hydrotherapy Unit in the presence of dignitaries from the Government, Church and communities.

The Main Building as we see today and the other buildings were later on added and officially opened in 2002. It is now a 50 bed Hospital with its main thrust in the area of maternal and child care, Dental along with De-addiction and Lifestyle services. A two bedded Adult Intensive care was opened in December 2016 which has since been upgraded into a 4 bedded ICU  and level 2 Neonatal intensive care centre which is soon to be upgraded to a level 3 NICU is under development too. Right from the outset the hospital runs a very busy male and female Hydrotherapy unit. Presently we have staff strength of 63.

Activities of the hospital

Apart from the regular service the Hospital provides, following are the other programs the hospital is and has engaged in:

TRAINING PROGRAM

1. Organized training program with Global Health access volunteers in Training Local Church Volunteers The use of PARA CHECK for easy detection of Malaria in Mamit District, 2003
2. Training of Bru refugee girls as Ward Aids in 2009
3. Community Lay Leader  Health training program in Primary Health care in Partnership with Christian Medical College, Vellore in 2015
4. Running Internship program for Diploma in Laboratory students from Beersheba Group of Institute   from 2019.And Earlier the Hospital has been used for doing practical class for Students of Helen Lowry higher secondary school student under- going Vocational Medical laboratory course.

HEALTH ADVOCACY PROGRAMS

1. Awareness campaigns against HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B,C infection, and Drugs and Tobacco in Schools and Community.
2. Conducting Lifestyle Disease prevention Seminar with Rotary Club of Aizawl in Information and Public Relation Hall, 2006
3. Regular Talk program in All India radio on Women’s Health
4. Conducting Health Education series in Vanapa Hall for a month in December, 2016 with Local Church personel.
5.  NEWSTART – Lifestyle cum De-addiction program from 2017.
6. Aizawl Adventist Hospital help co-ordinate RUN AND RIDE Campaign against Cancer with TATA TRUST Mumbai, Cachar Cancer Hospital Silchar, Rotary Club Aizawl, NSS Unit, Pachhunga University College and National Health Mission, Mizoram. March 20, 2018.   

COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM

1. Conducted – Artificial Limb Camp with Rotary Club  Aizawl with technical assistance rendered by The National Marwari  Foundation, Siliguri and the Rastriya Vilang Sewa Kendra and R&D centre , Ashok Vihar, New Delhi from 6-12 May 2004 in Aizawl Adventist Hospital.
2. Narcotic anonymous leh Alcoholic Anonymous meeting conducted thrice in a week from 2004-2005 .
3. Cervical cancer detection camps with cancer society of Mizoram and Rotary club of Aizawl. Malaria detection camp conducted with Rotary Club of Aizawl in 2004.
4. Fortnightly Free Clinic in Dinthar Veng with Rotary Club in 2004
5. Has carried out “ Health is wealth” project for 11 months in Aizawl district in 2007 on malaria prevention , immunization against measles, hepatitis injection and post-partum infection control with the help of ADRA India treating total of 3277 women and children through outreach clinics, immunizing 854 infants and children against hepatitis B infection and 378 children against measles. Distribution of sanitary pads to post-partum women and insecticide treated nets to 1350 families.
6. School Free Dental Health Program.
7. Regular Outreach Camp in Champhai till 2015
8. Multispecialty free Health camp conducted Rotary club of Aizawl and Narayana Health Kolkotta on February 19, 2018  

OTHER PROJECTS:

1. The Hospital run Hospice (CCC- Community Care Center) for HIV/AIDS clients from 2007 – 2010.
2. Aizawl Hospital provides free food for financially weak patients with the help of a local donor and also sets aside 1 % of its budget for organizing Free clinic with Local churches and other NGO’S and Aizawl Municipal corporation as per need.
3. The Hospital has a master plan to build a modern Hospital with Helipad.
